Unlocking Hydro Energy

About Green Highland Renewables

Green Highland Renewables (GHR) was founded in 2007 and specialises in developing small scale run of river hydro projects from about 50kW to 2MW. GHR provides advice and solutions to landowners and communities through the whole process of design, procurement and operation and helps provide them with a sustainable future whilst supporting Scotland’s responsible commitment to climate change.

The company is based in Perth, in central Scotland. The board of directors consists of experts from the fields of power generation, property development, land agency, finance, corporate affairs and project management. The company employs a dedicated team of professional staff, augmented by its close partnership with Scottish and Southern Energy plc, and wider support from specialist sub-contractors and associate companies.

What we do: click to find out

GHR provides a turnkey solution to the development of hydro schemes incorporating:

  • Identification of suitable sites
  • Feasibility studies – hydrological viability, grid connectivity, planning considerations, commercial modeling, land ownership
  • Environmental assessments
  • Planning submission and licence application
  • Tendering and contract administration
  • Procurement
  • Construction and design management
  • Operations and maintenance

GHR has a wide portfolio of projects across Scotland and has recently been appointed by Forestry Commission Scotland to explore the development of small scale hydro schemes on the national forest estate in the North West highlands.

GHR has been instrumental in creating hydro consortia between neighbouring landowners. A classic example is the seven scheme project in Glen Lyon, Perthshire with some schemes being in multi ownership.

The company’s business model allows GHR to participate in schemes as developers, joint venture partners or as project managers to owner-developers.
